Fenway is our honorary Beardie, and is truly my heart dog.
He is the root of my love for the Bearded Collie breed and partial inspiration for our kennel name, "Boston Light." His favorite things are hiking, swimming, squeaking all the toys, running agility, singing with the harmonica, and eating anything he can. Fenway was clipped down in May 2020 and is still as spritely as ever.
Fenway was my free puppy off the side of the road; bred irresponsibly by a family who refused to spay and neuter their dogs "due to cost." A male Bearded Collie and a female American Eskimo Dog in Abington, MA had multiple back-to-back litters of 'Fenways' around the year 2011. Conformationally, Fenway is not sound. He is extra wide in the front, toes out in the rear, and has very little substance to him. From a Beardie perspective, he has two different ear carriages, a snipy muzzle, and a tail that curls tight over his back when he is excited. Fenway was a pediatric neuter, as my family did not understand the necessity of hormones for proper growth and development. Regardless of everything he is or is not, Fenway has taught me so much about conformation, showing dogs, training dogs, grooming, behavior, health, and responsible dog breeding and ownership.
Fenway earned his AKC CD title with back-to-back-to-back qualifying scores in the "grown up" ring at the ESE in West Springfield, MA. I like to think that he was primed for this by the cattle show rings we typically trialed in at 4-H fairs. Fenway especially enjoyed therapy visits with the residents of Wingate nursing home in Kingston, MA. After I graduated high school and aged out of 4-H, Fenway began his training for Open, attended UMass Amherst with me, and moved to Washington State with us in 2021. We began our scentwork journey together in the spring of 2023, and we are eager to see how far he can go!
Fenway is pictured here with 14-year old Kaylee in 2012 at the Big E in New England. 4-H leader Rita LaPointe (pictured in maroon) called it "the Westminster of 4-H," where dog project members from all New England states came together to compete during the last weekend of the Big E fair. Fenway and Kaylee won their Novice Junior Showmanship class and competed for "Best Handler," later won by Kaylee and Fenway in 2015. Since this ...interesting.. haircut, Fenway has earned many accolades over the years including multiple qualifying novice obedience runs in the smelliest rings, and multiple class wins among the best youth competition in New England. He could always be found acting as an ambassador to 4-H and the Bearded Collie breed, hanging out with spectators at the Big E when he was not being shown.
